Report from Collision in Toronto: the North American tech ecosystem seen from Europe.
Collision in Toronto is the "Web Summit of North America." This year I attended for the first time. Here are my impressions.
The Canadian Ecosystem
Canada is emerging as an alternative to the US:
- Qualified talent
- Lower costs
- Favorable immigration policies
Startups to Watch
AI/ML
Toronto is a hub for artificial intelligence, thanks also to the University of Toronto.
FinTech
Many Canadian startups are challenging traditional banks.
CleanTech
Attention to the environment is very high.
Opportunities for European Companies
Partnerships
- R&D collaboration
- Market entry support
- Talent sharing
Investments
- Still reasonable valuations
- Less competition than Silicon Valley
- Clear exit paths
My Take
Collision deserves attention. Toronto and Canada are markets to consider for expansion.
